Hoe vaak moet je een dekbed wassen? (En waarom we het massaal vergeten)

How often should you wash your duvet? (And why we all forget to do it)

Everyone faithfully changes pillowcases and the fitted sheet, but when was the last time your duvet saw the inside of a washing machine? Research shows that an adult loses about half a liter of moisture per night. Add dead skin cells and night sweats to the mix and your bed quietly becomes the perfect breeding ground for dust mites and bacteria.

Even though we spend a lot of time under the covers, cleaning the duvet itself is one of the most skipped household tasks. How often should you really wash a duvet, what should you watch out for, and how can you make the whole process much easier?

The ideal washing schedule for a hygienic bedroom

Sleep hygiene experts recommend deep cleaning a traditional duvet at least 1 to 2 times a year. Still, there are situations where this schedule should go up significantly:

  • Allergies (dust mites): Wash every 1 to 2 months at a minimum of 60°C.
  • Night sweats or warm sleepers: Every 2 to 3 months.
  • Pets on the bed: Every 1 to 2 months to remove hair, dander, and dirt.

Daily and weekly care

Alongside periodic washes, you can extend the life of your bedding by airing it daily. Open up the duvet right after you get out of bed. Keep a window slightly open for at least 20 minutes so trapped moisture can evaporate.

Where traditional duvets fall short

Many people put off washing their duvet, and that is understandable. Caring for a standard duvet comes with practical hurdles:

  1. The washing machine is too small: A double duvet simply doesn’t fit in a standard 7 or 8 kg drum.
  2. Clumping fill: Down and synthetic fills lose their loft quickly if they are not dried properly.
  3. Hassle with covers: Removing and refitting the cover takes time and can be frustrating.

Switch to a smarter, more hygienic alternative

To avoid the struggle with heavy duvets and cramped washers, more and more people are switching to a washable duvet. This is an integrated 2-in-1 system where the fill and the cover are attached to each other.

The biggest perk? You toss the whole set into the machine in one go. Because these versions are designed to fold smoothly, they fit easily in a standard washer drum and dry much faster.

When to choose which type?

Since you can easily wash these duvets yourself on a regular basis, your sleep space stays free of buildup, allergens, and unpleasant odors.

3 quick tips to keep your bed fresh

  1. Wash at the right temperature: Ideally wash bedding at 60°C to kill dust mites effectively, as long as the care label allows it.
  2. Use gentle detergents: Avoid using too much detergent, as residue can stay in the fibers and cause irritation.
  3. Let the bed breathe: Don’t make your bed tight right after getting up. Give the mattress and duvet time to cool down and ventilate.
