Debating between a 200x220 and a 240x220 duvet? The choice is usually simpler than it seems. Since both are 220 cm long, it mainly comes down to your bed’s width. In short: 200x220 usually fits a mattress 120 to 150 cm wide, while 240x220 works better for 160 to 180 cm wide. That way you keep enough overhang on the sides and sleep more comfortably, especially if you share the duvet. Below you can quickly see which size suits your bed and what else to consider. The fastest way to pick the right size

Duvet sizes are listed as width first, then length. A 240x220 duvet is therefore 240 cm wide and 220 cm long. For your choice, width matters most. A duvet should be wider than your mattress so it drapes nicely over the sides and you do not end up uncovered at night. As a practical rule of thumb, aim for about 50 to 60 cm extra width compared to your mattress. For many Dutch double beds that naturally leads you to 200x220 or 240x220.

Quick size chart

Mattress width Most logical duvet size Often suits
120 to 150 cm 200x220 Small double or compact double bed
160 to 180 cm 240x220 Wider double bed or king size
200 cm or wider Often larger than 240x220 Extra wide beds with lots of overhang

Treat this as a practical guideline. If two of you sleep under one duvet and you want a bit more room, going one size up is often nicer than going tighter.

When 200x220 is the best choice

A 200x220 duvet is usually right if your mattress is 120, 140 or 150 cm wide. This size feels generous without being unnecessarily big. Especially on a 140 cm wide bed, 200x220 often strikes a great balance between comfort and practicality. The duvet drapes neatly over the sides yet is still easy to handle when making the bed. It is also a logical choice for a 140x210 or 140x220 mattress. Sleep solo on a slightly wider bed and do not want extra wide drape? Then 200x220 can be a perfect fit.

When 240x220 gives more comfort

The standard pick for wider double beds of 160 or 180 cm is the king size: Duvets 240x220. Especially if you share one duvet, this size brings noticeably more calm. You get more fabric on both sides, less chance of the duvet pulling askew and the bed looks fuller when made. On a 160 cm wide mattress, 200x220 can still work, but it often feels snug more quickly. Sharing with a partner, 240x220 is usually the more comfortable choice. If you pick 240x220 and want an all season option right away, check out 4 season duvet 240x220.

What to double check

220 cm is the length

For both 200x220 and 240x220 the length stays the same. See Duvets 220 cm long. That is especially nice if you are taller than about 1.80 m, love extra tucking room or sleep on a 210 or 220 cm long bed. If you are mainly choosing between these two sizes, your decision is almost always about width, not length.

Duvet cover should be the same size

Using a traditional duvet? Then pick a cover in exactly the same size. A 220 cm long duvet in a 200 cm long cover often fits awkwardly. Prefer less hassle? A coverless duvet can be a practical solution. Want to know more about the right size? Read Which size coverless duvet suits your bed. At HappyBed you do not need a separate cover, which makes making and washing a lot simpler. Always check the specific care instructions for the product.

Frequently asked questions

Is a duvet 240 cm long or wide?

With duvet sizes, width comes first. A 240x220 duvet is therefore 240 cm wide and 220 cm long.

Can a 220 duvet go in a 200 cover?

Usually not a great look. The duvet can puff up, fold over or stick out at the bottom. For the best fit, choose duvet and cover in the same size.

How do you place a 240x220 duvet on the bed?

Laying 240 cm across the width of the bed and 220 cm along the length. This way the duvet falls neatly down both sides.

Can a 200x200 duvet go in the washing machine?

That depends on the type of duvet, the fill weight, the care label and your machine’s drum capacity. Always follow your duvet’s care instructions before washing.
